Ancestry of West Virginia

Nicknamed ‘The Mountain State’, West Virginia sits in the Appalachian and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. There’s Pennsylvania to the northeast, Virginia to the southeast, Maryland to the east and northeast, Ohio to the northwest, and Kentucky to the southwest.

Archeological evidence points to the existence of village societies that thrived in the area, with a well-established trade system that utilized cold-worked copper pieces. The formidable Iroquois, consisting of five native tribes, drove out other native tribes from the region in the 1760s. The area was a rich hunting ground, especially the Ohio Valley. Moneton, a Siouan-speaking tribe, had occupied the region at some point.

A hundred years on, occupation of the territory was contested by Anglo-American factions as well, with both Virginia and Pennsylvania claiming rights under their respective colonial charters. All this happened before the American Revolutionary War. The region was recognized as a part of the State of Virginia between 1776 and 1863.

There were concerns in the west regarding representation to the legislature among other administrative imbalances in the region. This strife resulted in the formation of a breakaway government in 1861, known as the Restored Government. Subsequently, a majority vote resulted in secession, and the new state of West Virginia joined the State of the Union as an independent entity.

The estimated population of West Virginia as of 2019 is 1.792 million, a slight decrease from the previous census. Among the southeastern states, West Virginia is the least populous. Most of the state’s residents speak English, with only a foreign contingent – that speaks an additional language other than English at home – of 2.6%.

A large number of German residents in the region live in the northeastern counties. There’s an even distribution of people with English ancestry throughout West Virginia.

Fun fact: Only Florida has a higher percentage of senior citizens (persons aged 65 and above) in the United States with 17.3%. The Mountain State comes second with 16%. That percentage indicates a huge chunk of the potential workforce as individuals in that age bracket are almost certainly retirees.

The white population in West Virginia has only slightly dropped over the last three decades, and without many foreign-born residents, that statistic is unlikely to change.
