Ancestry of Wisconsin

Also known as America’s Dairyland or The Badger State, Wisconsin sits in the Great Lakes region. The state borders Lake Superior on its northern border. Wisconsin ranks 20th in terms of population and is the 23rd-largest state in the US. The region was admitted to the State of the Union on May 29th, 1848.

Wisconsin has a rich French history. The first European to land in the region was probably Jean Nicolet in 1634, canoeing to shore at Red Banks, near Green Bay. Since that first encounter with the natives, a lot of interaction would ensue in the following years. Other Frenchmen visited the neighboring bays as a vibrant fur trade took root in the area. Despite the many business trips to the region, no permanent settlements were put up by the French.

The British gradually took hold of Wisconsin during the French and Indian War and took charge of Green Bay and neighboring areas in 1761. By 1763, the whole state was under Great Britain. The region’s first proper settlers comprised of French-Canadians, a few African American freedmen, and some Anglo-New Englanders.

Wisconsin became a US territory after the American Revolutionary War in 1783. In subsequent years, it formed part of existing Indiana, Illinois, and Michigan territories. The establishment of lead mining after 1812 saw the region nicknamed The Badger State.
