Ancestry in Mississippi

Mississipp��i was admitted to the Union in 1817. The few years that followed saw the state booming with cotton production since much of the population was composed of the enslaved persons. They contributed to 55% of the people in Mississippi, then. That is why it’s known to be the land where most slaves lived during the civil war and afterward before the great migration.

After the movement, African Americans in Mississippi joined the minority groups, but they still contribute to more than a third of the population. Some of the most significant events in the civil rights demonstrations happened in this state, and one of them was the Ole Miss riot of 1962. There are large agricultural areas in the state and many rural towns.

That’s one reason why the state ranks low in health, not to mention high poverty rates. While the African Americans joined the minority group section, they still form the largest group in the state, making it the largest compared to other states.

Back in the day, the French and Spanish introduced the Roman Catholic religion. That was in the 17th century, but things changed later as more Anglo-American settlers came in from the south. Now, there are more protestant churches such as Methodist and Baptist.

Races in Mississippi

It all started with getting rid of the Indians in the early 19th century before settling the whites and the enslaved African Americans. We are now in the 21st century, and the results are excellent. As we said before, 70% of the people are considered to be of a mixed-race. That means race suppression in this state, and that’s an excellent step towards equalization.

As you read this, African Americans constitute 37.8% of Mississippi’s population. During the slavery days, many African American women had children from their European masters, and that’s how the race mix started. However, the blacks population decreased in the state after the Great migration, hence becoming a minority group in the state.

Basing on the 2010 census, the racial makeup in Mississippi was as follows:

White Americans: 59.1 % (58% for the non-Hispanic white and 1.1% for the white Hispanic).
African Americans: 37.0%
Asian Americans: 0.9%
Native Indians and those from Native Alaska: 0.5%
Others: 1.4%
Multiracial Americans: 1.1%

As of 2011, 53.8% of the born infants and those under the age of 1 were minorities. That tells us that one of the parents was from a different race other than the non-Hispanic white.
